She opens the door and steps into the light. Finding herself beneath the warm red shade of a large tree, she pauses to breathe in the newness of her surroundings. Beyond the hill, a sun-drenched valley awaits. Adventure, mystery, and new possibilities abound. All she need do is follow the path leading towards the unfamiliar, and embrace her true destiny . . .

Wishing all of you a beautiful week full of discovery and wonder! This latest piece is now on display for Fotoweek DC at Touchstone Gallery.

Music has now become a convenient pleasure. You can think of a song and download it within minutes. I recall a time when listening to it was a luxury that took a lot more effort. You’d wait with bated breath for your favorite band to release a new song on the radio, and wait till midnight to see a new music video premiering on MTV (a blank VHS in the player, and your trigger happy finger on the record button). As much as I love progress and technology, I still romantically hold on to my vinyl records. The dusty crackle and pop as the needle hits the record, that white noise pause before the music kicks in—it all takes me back to happy memories of running in place while listening to Del Shannon’s Runaway, bopping to Bobby Day’s Rockin’ Robin, and wistfully tossing spare change into the air as Bille Holiday sang Pennies From Heaven. Records are priceless tomes in my library, and this piece is a homage to my undying love for vinyl.

Meadows Of Dan

One of my fondest childhood memories is the Summer of my 4th year. I was barefoot, in a black-and-white-striped bathing suit, dashing in and out of my grandparent’s creek. There was a wide green meadow—dappled with Queen Anne’s Lace—the creek wound its way through and across a field where two horses roamed. They answered to the names Blackberry and Sunshine. I’d visit them with tiny fists of clover, and carefully, I’d climb the worn wooden fence to hop upon their backs. For hours, I’d take turns riding them, free as the wind. I’d lay along their backs and pet them as they grazed, braid flowers into their manes, and tell them stories from my imagination. They taught me how to love without expectation or agenda, and that speaking without words is how nature also communicates.

Upon the handsome Braidy, a sweetly rescued Arabian, I reminisce. The clouds above carry with them a tease of future inspiration. Looking across the riding grounds, my mother’s smiling face causes my heart to leap. This beautiful moment is another treasured memory, the love of which I shall carry forever. May your day present you with fond of memories.

Notré Dame

Autumn glides in like the perfect Lady. The chill kiss of October whispers on the breeze, a promise of changing leaves and pumpkin spice. I carry a remnant of Paris with me—the stained glass of Notre Dame, pinned to my necklace from Tokyo’s Harajuku district. The base of the pin is my painting of a pocket watch, an element of time’s frozen cogs. If I could freeze time now it would be while sipping hot apple cider laced with cinnamon and nutmeg, smiling, wishing all of you a magically wonderful Harvest Season.  Autumn is here!

It was Jim Morrison that said: “The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You trade in your sense for an act. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask. There can’t be any large-scale revolution until there’s a personal revolution, on an individual level. It’s got to happen inside first.”

Whether it’s making your life happier or helping others, you are the revolution that you have waited for. Never forget how powerful you are.

“Wire Girl & Cardboard Man” is a Trémotion Pictures production. I had the great pleasure to create and direct this music video for Dickie Chapin’s music project, Colortone. I handmade the characters using recycled and green materials. There are featured scenes in the video that were shot in historic sites in London and around the Washington DC area. The video is now available on YouTube and Vimeo.

Head In The Clouds

Growing up, I was told by others, “Tré, your head is in the clouds. You need to come back down to Earth.” Well, all these years later, my head is still in the clouds, I’m still dreaming, and creating despite the odds. I hand painted this bow-tie as a reminder to never stop dreaming big, to keep creating, and accomplishing my dreams—one tiny one at a time. May all of you keep dreaming, and continue making this world an inspiring and beautiful place. I’m in your corner, cheering you on!

Seeing Stars

Last night I dreamed that a man in a tuxedo was tossing bouncy balls at me. About thirty would come flying at a time, and as they fell toward me I was filled with so much joy. Smiling, I tried to clutch them all to my chest. I would grow sad for the ones that fell through my fingers. As I bent down trying recover the ones that got away, the man said to me, “Those are lost to you. Catch and hold onto as much as you can. Do not worry about the rest, they don’t matter.” My sadness slowly faded as I realized this was a metaphor for life. It’s easy to focus on what we lose, opposed to what we gain. With armfuls of happiness being tossed at me, I let go of what was lost, tucked in the hem of my shirt, and started stuffing the bouncy balls down the front. I awoke feeling happier. I hope all of you feel the same, and hold on to the happiness life tosses at you. The rest . . . doesn’t matter.

The cherry blossoms are back in bloom! DC has been, once again, transformed into a magical snow globe of falling petals. 100 years ago, the gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo was bestowed upon Washington, DC. This piece was photographed at last year’s National Cherry Blossom Festival, and this year it commemorates and honors the beautiful gift of trees.

The latest piece from my new “Back to Nature” series is now on display at the Touchstone Gallery in DC, from now till the end of April.

Cabbage’s Rescue

Cabbage The Brown Bat © Tré Inc. 2011

Here is the little darling Cabbage, when I tried to release him outside. He hooked into the deck rug, cold and shaking not able to fly. Brown bats usually wake when temperatures rise about 55F . . . it was 64F, and yet he felt it was still too cold in his mind. With gloves and a towel, I gently placed him back into the shoebox, and he happily went to sleep. This was when we decided to call Bat World and ask for advice, it was obvious that he still wanted to wait for spring. He sure did add an interesting dynamic to the rug pattern. Bat wings look like they have a spiderweb across them. I always thought their wings were smooth skin, his actually had a delicate texture. Very fascinating.

Snug like a . . . Cabbage in a box! That sweet little fuzzy face, he rests inside the safe warmth and comforting darkness of my shoebox. By this time, he had fully resolved that I was not going to eat him, and he no longer cried when approached. I’d peek in the box, and if he was awake he’d peer up at me. His look was like, “Yeah, I’m still here, I am in a box you know.” Shortly after I shot his photo, we took him to the rescue home. I can visit him anytime, and shall call to check on him often. In two months we shall bring him back to be released. I think a Cabbage Release party shall be in order!
